Question by el albert: Can I install an external monitor on my Apple iMac desktop?
the screen cracked, and although its visible its annoying. However, people tell me its easier and cheaper to buy a new computer than to get it fixed.

Yes plug it in the back of your iMac. Your screen should be replaceable under warranty.
